1st Peter 1:17-21

Living in the fear of the Lord!

What does it mean to live in the fear of the Lord?

Why is living in this fear important for us as believers?

How does living in reverent fear lead to holiness?

    • We become motivated by the tension of confidence and accountability!
    • We become captivated by the treasure of God’s costly love!
    • We become awed by the wonder of his plan and our place in it!

Questions:

  1.  Did the Holy Spirit speak to you about anything today?
  2.  Define the fear of the Lord.  What struggles do you have in understanding or embracing that concept?  What struggles do you have about seeing God as judge and father?
  3. Read Isaiah 11:1-4. In this scripture from Isaiah, which was fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the fear of the Lord is mentioned twice (vv. 2,3). Why do you think the fear of the Lord was one of Jesus’ qualities?  What does the fact that Jesus Christ walked in the fear of the Lord suggest about the importance of the fear of the Lord in a believer’s life?
  4. How can the judgment of God give you confidence but also accountability?  Is judgment for a Christian punitive or motivating?
  5. How can the fear of the Lord lead to joy?
  6. What questions do you have that arise from does this section of scripture that need further exploration?
